John Bellew, the prominent private equity lawyer, has joined Bowman Gilfillan from Webber Wentzel, where he had spent almost 30 years in their corporate practice. As a partner in Bowman Gilfillan’s corporate practice, he will head up the firm’s Private Equity group. Joining him in the move to Bowman Gilfillan’s corporate practice are James Westgate as Partner and Tim McDougall as Senior Associate.
Commenting on the appointments, Chairman and Senior Partner said ““We are delighted to welcome lawyers of this calibre to Bowman Gilfillan Africa Group. They will significantly enhance our existing private equity offering in South Africa and across Africa, where private equity is a major driver of inbound investment.”
The appointments form part of the firm’s strategy to bolster its capabilities in areas that are a key focus for the firm’s clients. Bellew has advised on some of the largest private equity transactions seen in the South African market and is widely recognized as one of the industry’s leading practitioners, while Westgate is recognized for number of legal areas with a focus on corporate transactions, including private equity transactions, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, due diligence and acquisition and structured finance. McDougall has worked closely with both Bellew and Westgate on previous transactions.
All three appointments are effective October 1st, and they will be based in the law firm’s Johannesburg office.
