Former partner and head of ENSafrica’s Africa practice, Scott Nelson, has joined Baker & McKenzie’s Johannesburg office where he will be part of the international law firm’s global private equity team. His focus will be on providing African and Africa-focused private equity funds with advice on cross-border deals and investments. His appointment was effective on the 1st of March.
Commenting on the appointment, Mike Fieweger, the global head of Baker & McKenzie’s private equity practice said “Seeking growth opportunities in emerging markets is currently the number one priority for the PE industry. With interest in Africa at record levels we are delighted to welcome Scott to the Firm at a time when fundraising, investments and exits are all rising and look set to continue to do so over the coming years.”
Nelson brings almost 20 years of private equity experience to the firm and will be responsible for expanding the firm’s Pan-African private equity offering, providing cross-border and transaction advice to specialist Africa-focused funds and fund managers. It’s expected he will work closely with Morné van der Merwe, Baker’s South African Corporate M&A head and David Allen, the head of the firm’s London Private Equity practice.
Baker & McKenzie’s Johannesburg office has more than tripled in size since it opened 2012 and now has more than 100 lawyers and staff.
