Powering up sub-Saharan Africa

In the wake of the passage of the Electrify Africa Act by the U.S. House of Representatives, an interesting, useful article recapping the various initiatives under way to ramp up the electrification of sub-Saharan Africa. Despite the big pushes, progress remains slow despite the advent of new capital looking for ventures.

However, grassroots energy businesses are starting to provide new services that could do for the power industry what ICT entrepreneurs have done for Africa’s mobile telecoms revolutions, giving hope that more private investment and less government interference will accelerate electricity access for the 585 million or so sub-Saharan Africans living without it today.
