Spanish tycoon sets sights on West African bank deals

Alberto Cortina, the Spanish construction magnate, is eyeing financial services opportunities driven by demand from sovereign and corporate clients in West Africa. “We want to create a financial institution for Africa,” he tells Bloomberg.  With his Banque de Dakar already offering investment banking services in Senegal, his group is currently performing due diligence on one of the country’s retail banks. Plans are also afoot for the group to set up an investment banking unit in Cote d’Ivoire by the end of the year.
